Dr Georgios Samakovitis

Principal Lecturer, University of Greenwich

Dr Georgios Samakovitis is a Principal Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Greenwich (Dept. of Computing & Information Systems). He holds an MEng in Computer Engineering, MSc in Data Networks and an MBA. His earliest research work dates to 1994 and investigated the use of pattern recognition and AI for 3D medical image processing and reconstruction, as part of the Greek Ministry of Health Research Fund. George’s PhD research at the University of Edinburgh focused on Internet banking technology investment decisions in the dot-com boom and bust periods (1999-2004), addressing, among other issues, the banking sector’s attitudes to uncertainty and risk under the disparate decision-making paradigms dictated by economic climate.

His current work is concentrating on banking and payment systems technologies, Enterprise Architectures and the uses of AI and Machine Learning in financial information systems. Most recent projects investigated the uses of Artificial Intelligence in anti-money laundering and financial transaction fraud assessment and mitigation, including the development of Collective Intelligence frameworks for AML in financial ecosystems; ongoing work includes the investigation into developments in cryptocurrency (Decentralised Virtual Asset Class) markets.

From 2015 to 2017, George has been a member of the FinCrime working group of the UK Payments Strategy Forum, specialising particularly on KYC and Transaction Data Sharing and Analytics strategies, policies and solutions. He is a Senior Fellow if the UK HEA, a member of the ACM and AISB professional bodies and a member of the ESRC Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) peer review panel.
