Inherent vulnerabilities in the international trade system, including the enormous volume of trade flows, which obscures individual transactions, provide abundant opportunity for criminal organisations and terrorist groups to transfer value across borders. (FATF Report, 20/6/2008)

The regulated sector provides critical support to enable the free flow of goods, services, technology and funds from old and emerging markets. Unfortunately, the significant and global flows of funds and goods between international trade partners offers lucrative opportunities for criminally collusive criminals to move value between themselves.

Hiding dirty money in both false and legitimate trade transactions is a significant concern for banks, regulators, law enforcement agencies and national governments.

In this course, delegates will develop an enhanced understanding of the trade products and services that are offered and of the risks relating to the movement of goods and within transaction flows. This will include the very latest trends in trade based money laundering techniques, and how terrorist financiers, tax evaders and sanctions evaders use trade to achieve their illicit aims.

Using real-life case studies, exercises and learning from the peer group, delegates will be encouraged to develop an enhanced practical understanding on how to manage trade based financial crime risks, whilst meeting commercial, legal and regulatory compliance responsibilities.

The Academy’s Trade Based Money Laundering Course Will be Suitable For:

  • All operational risk professionals including financial crime compliance (FCC) and money laundering practitioners
  • Customer facing and middle office professionals in Trade Finance functions of regulated firms

Trade Based Money Laundering Course Overview & Expected Learning Outcomes

The course provides an introduction to trade and trade based finance, including a history of developments leading up to the current day and modern-day supply chain finance. Delegates will learn more about some of the trade based products and services, and of the international laws and trade practises such as UCP rules that govern these.

You will understand more about some specific trade based money laundering typologies, such as the misrepresentation of value, quantity and quality of goods. This includes the work of the bodies such as the International Maritime Bureau to identify fraud-based activities such as false documentation.

During the session, delegates will develop an enhanced awareness of real-life operational trade-related financial crime risks and how the regulated sector is used to move value between international collusive criminals.

Critically, delegates will gain a better understanding of some of the risk management techniques and the reason behind increased regulation and regulatory scrutiny. This will include red flags to identify criminal activity.

Finally, the course will provide an update on modern day international terrorism financing and the licensing of dual-use goods and substances listed under sanctions restrictions.
